When I was growing up my family owned a gift shop. When you are in the gift business, your life revolves around holidays. Good thing we loved holidays! Although Christmas was magical, it was also exhausting and back then there seemed to be a lot of pressure on giving to everyone. People were stressed and harried. That’s why my father’s favorite holiday was Easter. He always said people give at Christmas because they have to, people give at Easter because they want to. Easter was big with an egg tree and decorations. Pastel colors, chicks and bunnies abounded but one set of decorations gives me the fondest memories. Early in our family life Mother and Daddy had volunteered to decorate tables at church. They blew out dozens and dozens of eggs. They washed them well and papier machéd them. Those eggs were so strong because of the glue and paper that they were part of our decorating for years. Continue reading

What’s the best way to help cut our impact on the planet from carbon emissions? Use less energy. Did you know that up to 20% of the electricity* that is produced in America is lost before it ever arrives to your home, office or church? Yep, it’s a well-kept secret that energy prodcuers don’t want you to know. Some of it is coal or natural gas lost in transit to generation stations. Most of it is the transmission of the electricity or natural gas to the end-user. You don’t get charged for the loss directly. It is built into the rates everyone is charged. But waste is waste, and we can all take part in reducing waste. So, what’s the answer? Reduce your use. There are many ways to reduce your usage. Number one use? Air-conditioner. No, I am not telling you to turn off your air-conditioner. I live in Hotlanta after all and the rest of my family lives in even hotter places. Continue reading

Oh the holidays! Who doesn’t love it, even though it can be overwhelming? One of the ways it is overwhelming is all the stuff. The paper, the packages, the presents, the bows, the tree, the garland and don’t forget the mistletoe! And all that stuff has a big impact. December is the highest month for landfill deposits. Ready to be overwhelmed? Household waste increases by a whopping 25% between Thanksgiving and Christmas. 30 million Christmas Trees will end up in landfills. 4 million tons of wrapping paper and gift bags alone will be used.
